Local Yokel

Certainly the most challenging poetry in the AMERICAN LANDSCAPE repertoire is that of Thomas Hornsby Ferril. Among the most familiar and accessible is the Robert Frost poetry. Apparently the two men were friends! You can read about that relationship - and more - in an easy-to-read tribute to Colorado's Poet Laureate that the city of Denver has posted here.
My affection for the Four Pastorales began when Roger Duffer taught one of them to me and the Redlands High School Chamber Singers... in the 1970's! Later, while living in Boulder, CO, I was honored to meet Cecil Effinger. I never met Ferril the poet, but I did come to love the landscape that inspired him. While southern California is my home in every way, and I marvel at its natural beauty, Colorado's mountain majesty commands one's attention in a different way entirely. If you've never been to the Rockies, make it a priority.
